Prevention is one of the most powerful tools to protect our health. In Puerto Rico, thousands of women are diagnosed each year with precancerous lesions or cervical cancer—often due to lack of early screening. Pap and HPV tests are essential to detect cellular changes early and take action before they become a threat to life.
At HRP Labs, we support healthcare providers with advanced technology and precise processes to deliver fast, accurate, and human-centered results.
What is a Pap test?
Also known as cervical cytology, the Pap test is a preventive screening used to detect abnormal cell changes in the cervix that could indicate early stages of cervical cancer.
At HRP Labs, we offer three validated methods for Pap processing:
- Conventional
- ThinPrep®
- SurePath®
These options allow flexibility for physicians based on clinical need and offer high-quality cellular analysis by our cytopathology specialists.
What is the HPV Test and why is it important?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. Certain high-risk strains—particularly HPV types 16 and 18—are associated with cervical cancer.
The HPV test detects the presence of high-risk viral strains, often before any cellular changes occur. When combined with a Pap test, it creates a more comprehensive and effective screening strategy.
What other women’s health tests are available at HRP Labs?
In addition to Pap and HPV testing, HRP Labs also offers important ancillary testing such as:
- Chlamydia and Gonorrhea
- Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma
- Trichomonas vaginalis
- Herpes virus (PCR)
These infections can be asymptomatic, but may affect fertility, cause chronic discomfort, or increase the risk of gynecological complications. Early detection is essential for protecting reproductive health.
⚠️ Important: The sample collection for the HPV test must be performed by your gynecologist. At HRP Labs, we receive the sample, process it in our Cytopathology Division, and our certified team of cytopathologists and cytotechnologists provides an accurate diagnosis. This test is not performed using blood or urine, unlike other tests typically offered by clinical laboratories.
What if my results are abnormal?
If your results show abnormalities, HRP Labs ensures they are reviewed by board-certified pathologists. This guarantees a thorough and professional interpretation, allowing your physician to make more confident clinical decisions.
Important: HRP Labs does not promote or prescribe any tests. Always consult your primary care provider or OB-GYN, who will determine which studies you need and guide you through your results.
